Glasses 1

Glasses are very common - they are used in containers, lenses and windows all around us.

Two of the important properties of glasses are their transparency and their ease of fabrication

viscosity vs temperatureGlass is produced by melting the components together and casting them, similarly to metal. After casting the glass is formed at high temperatures (usually within the working range - between the working and softening temperatures).

A number of processes are used to form glass:

• Hot pressing
• Rolling
• Float moulding
• Blow moulding
• Fibre forming
