Introduction 1

By the end of this tutorial, you should have an understanding of:

  • the effect of alloying additions on microstructure and properties

  • the various components of a phase diagram

  • how phases change with temperature and alloy content

  • what phase equilibrium effects occur in the process of welding and how this affects the properties

Many materials are mixtures, even if they only have a trace of impurity. But some materials are deliberately made as mixtures, to give better properties and/or costs.

Phase diagrams are maps of phase equilibria. To predict the structure of a metallic alloy or ceramic, a materials engineer will first look at the phase diagram. It shows its structure at equilibrium which will allow its properties to be predicted.
